Most stolen bikes were locked with one cheap lock to nothing at all. Here is the routine that keeps thieves walking past.
Bike theft in the Netherlands is a numbers game. Thieves look for the bike that takes the least time, so the goal is simply to be the harder option on the rack.
Lock it to something fixed A frame lock only stops the bike from being ridden away. Thieves lift it into a van. Always add a chain or cable that goes around the frame and a fixed object such as a bike rack.
Use two different locks A second lock of a different type needs a second tool and a second minute. Pair a frame lock with an ART-rated chain.
Look for the ART stars ART-2 and ART-3 locks are independently tested. For bikes worth more than EUR 1,500 our policies require at least an ART-2 lock, and ART-3 above EUR 5,000.
Park where people walk Well-lit, busy racks beat quiet corners. Avoid leaving the bike in the same spot every night.
